Spa flow switches are directional and
pressure switches are not. However, pressure switches have to be
installed on the output side (pressure side) of the pump while a
spa flow switch will work on either side. As far as the heater
itself, as long as it is filled with moving water it doesn't matter
which direction it flows.
Flow switches are used to detect whether there is
any water flowing through the heater assembly. Unfortunately, when
these things fail, they generally fail in the closed position and
there is no indication that they are not doing their job. In most
cases a spa system will work just fine with a stuck pressure or low
switch - until there is a need for it.
