Recently, the NSPI Hot Tub Council asked for monetary support from
manufacturers, suppliers, & retailers to help fund a medical study on
lower back pain. This study has the potential to impact the hot tub
industry in extraordinary ways. We are pleased to report that our call to
action was answered - we raised to date $80,100 of our $94,000 goal ...
enough to give us the confidence to proceed forward! We would like to
thank all of those who took the initiative to support this worthy cause.
Once spa therapy is found to be a safe &
cost effective alternative treatment for lower back pain, the impact to
the hot tub industry will be tremendous. Hot
tubs will no longer be viewed as a hedonistic product, but as a valid
home health aid.
WHY LOWER BACK PAIN WAS CHOSEN:
- Up to 84% of Americans will experience lower back pain
- It is the second leading cause of sick leave
- It is the second leading cause for consulting a doctor
- Warm water therapy has long been known by physicians & patients
alike to aid in its relief, but a conclusive study has yet to be
conducted
- The likelihood of success is supported by the encouragement of our
product's use by doctors & chiropractors, the recognition of the
National Arthritis Foundation, & the abundance of customer testimonials
we receive each year
THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY CAN BE FAR REACHING:
- Our hot tub customers may begin to receive economic support from
insurance agencies
- Corporations will learn that financially supporting a hot tub
purchase for an employee on a workman's comp claim is a wise economic
decision
- National TV, newspaper, & magazine coverage telling the world that
our product is a proven health benefit
- State & national agencies may provide improved tax benefits to our
customers
- Encouragement of grant money for additional studies on related
ailments: i.e. arthritis, insomnia, etc.
- Increased sales to all companies associated with the hot tub
industry!
A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE PROPOSED STUDY:
- All participants will have experienced lower back pain one month
prior to the study beginning
- A total of 140 patients (70 in each group) referred by orthopedic
surgeons will be tested. One group will receive standard therapy while
the other group will receive both standard therapy & supervised warm
water therapy.
- Participants will be evaluated on both pain reduction & improved
quality of life
- A36 list questionnaire will determine a variety of responses:
physical functioning, vitality, mental health, bodily pain, etc.
- Participants' demographic profiles will be obtained
- The study will take one year to complete
